Image is a chest-up view of Surgeon David Mathews. He wears a dark double-breasted frock coat with three-piece staff officer buttons, a black felt collar and major or lieutenant-colonel shoulder straps. He also wears a dark vest. Pinned to the left chest of the frock coat is a 20th Corps badge with a colored center.
Contrast and clarity are very good. Mount corners are clipped. Paper and mount edges have light surface dirt but nothing serious.
Reverse has a photographer’s imprint for HENRY ULKE… WASHINGTON, D.C. 1865. Bottom has period ink ID of “DAVID MATTHEWS, SURGEON 143RD N.Y. VOLS.” Reverse also has a modern pencil notation that it is from the album of Captain Jirah Young.
David Matthews (also spelled Mathews in the records) was born in 1830. He was commissioned assistant surgeon of the 143rd New York Infantry on September 24, 1862 and was made surgeon February 6, 1864. He was mustered out at Washington, D.C. on July 20, 1865.
While with the 143rd the regiment was engaged at Suffolk, Wauhatchie, Missionary Ridge, relief of Knoxville, served throughout the Atlanta Campaign, Averysboro and Bentonville.
After the war Mathews practiced medicine in Monticello, New York and became the Police Surgeon for the city of New York. He died in Manhattan, New York on July 9, 1891 and is buried in Cavalry Cemetery in Woodside, New York. [AD][PH:L]
