CDV is of Willett T. Embler wearing a dark frock coat and sporting a long beard.
Contrast and clarity are very good. Mount has clipped corners while the paper has some light foxing but nothing that detracts from the image.
Reverse has a photographer’s imprint for HOPE… NEW YORK. Reverse also has a period ink ID that reads “LT. EMBLER 143RD N.Y. V. I.” Reverse also has a canceled 2 cent tax stamp and some collector information in pencil. Image came from an album of 143rd New York soldiers.
Willett T. Embler was 41 years old when he was commissioned a 2nd lieutenant in Company K, 143rd New York Infantry on October 9, 1862. He commanded his Company from March 12, 1863 to April 17, 1863. On July 24, 1863 by order of General O.O. Howard he was sent to New York to take charge of conscripts headed to the regiment. He was mustered out at Washington, D.C. on July 20, 1865.
While with the 143rd, the regiment was engaged at Suffolk, Wauhatchie, Missionary Ridge, relief of Knoxville, served throughout the Atlanta Campaign, Averysboro and Bentonville. [AD][PH:L]
