CDV is of George C. Pinney sporting a rather fancy goatee and in the uniform of a 2nd lieutenant.

Contrast and clarity are very good. Mount has clipped corners. Paper is good with only minor surface dirt. Bottom center of the mount has a photographer’s imprint from Washington, D.C.

Reverse has a period ink ID at bottom that reads “COMPLIMENTS GEO. C. PINNEY, LT. 143 F N.Y.S.V.” There is also some collector information in modern pencil and a canceled 2 cent tax stamp. Image came from an album of 143rd New York soldiers.

George Chester Pinney was born in Bethel, New York in 1833. He enlisted as a private in Company F, 143rd New York Infantry on October 8, 1862. He was commissioned a 2nd lieutenant and transferred to Company I on October 17, 1863 and was then made 1st lieutenant in Company H on May 31, 1865. He was mustered out at Washington, D.C. on July 20, 1865.

While with the 143rd the regiment was engaged at Suffolk, Wauhatchie, Missionary Ridge, relief of Knoxville, served throughout the Atlanta Campaign, Averysboro and Bentonville.

Pinney was married twice. His first wife died during the war leaving him 2 children and his second wife was the sister of the local Sheriff with whom he had three more children. Pinney spent most of his life in farming and lumbering. He served as Justice of the Peace in Cochecton and was also Town Clerk and was also a notary.

Pinney died in Carbondale, Pennsylvania on New Years Day of 1916 and was buried in Curtius Eddy Cemetery in Cochecton. New York.  [AD][PH:L]
