CDV is of Isaac Jelliff posed with his kepi, complete with 20th Corps badge, resting in his lap. He wears a dark frock coat with 1st lieutenant’s shoulder straps, vest and trousers with the thin officer’s leg stripe. Attached to his left arm is a mourning rosette presumably for President Lincoln

Contrast and clarity are very good. Mount has light surface dirt and clipped lower corners while the paper also shows light dirt and is toned.

Reverse has a photographer’s imprint for JOHN GOLDIN & CO… WASHINGTON, D.C. Reverse also has a period ink ID and inscription that reads “ISAAC JELLIFF, 1ST. LT. CO. B 143RD, N.Y.S. VOLS. RESIDENCE WOODBOURNE, SULL CO., N.Y.” Reverse also has a canceled 3 cent tax stamp. Image came from an album of 143rd New York soldiers.

Isaac Jelliff was born in New York in May of 1839. He was commissioned a 1st lieutenant and adjutant of the 56th New York Infantry on September 21, 1861 and was discharged on February 17, 1862.

Next, Jelliff was made 1st sergeant of Company K, 143rd New York Infantry on October 9, 1862 being commissioned a 2nd lieutenant on April 17, 1863 and 1st lieutenant in Company B on April 18, 1864. He was mustered out July 20, 1865.

While with the 143rd the regiment was engaged at Suffolk, Wauhatchie, Missionary Ridge, relief of Knoxville, served throughout the Atlanta Campaign, Averysboro and Bentonville.

Jelliff died in Wawarsing, New York on April 14, 1923 and is buried Woodbourne Reformed Cemetery in Woodbourne, New York.  [AD][PH:L]
