Image shows Puffer from the waist up. He wears a dark frock coat with 1st lieutenant’s shoulder straps. The coat has a black felt collar and is only buttoned at the waist and midriff leaving the collar open to reveal a bright white shirt and dark bowtie.
Contrast and clarity of the image is excellent. Paper has been cut into an oval and attached to the reverse side of the mount. Under the image and following the curved contour of the paper is a period pencil ID of “CAPT. ALFRED F. PUFFER A.D.C.”
Backside of the mount is blank but for a red decorative border.
Puffer was born in Boston, Massachusetts on February 26, 1837. He took up his permanent residence in New York City in 1855 and was there when he was commissioned 1st lieutenant on the staff of General Benjamin Butler on July 14, 1862. He was promoted to captain on October 1, 1862 and resigned on March 18, 1865.
After the war Puffer was Deputy Collector of Customs for the port of New York. He was also President of the Customs House Clerks Mutual Aid Society and a Mason.
Puffer died in New York City on July 1, 1875. His body was returned to Boston for burial. [AD][PH:L]
