Standing studio image of George W. Giet in Naval uniform. Clear image with good contrast. Giet is in double-breasted frock with simple shoulder straps. Waist belt has two-piece Navy buckle and his Naval sword hangs at his side.

Mount features a red border. Bottom edge has been trimmed.

Back of mount has no photographer’s imprint. Wonderful ink inscription reads, “Very Truly Yours / George W. Giet, U.S.N. / U.S.S. Ship St. Mary’s / Panama / Aug. 15th 1864”. A later note reads “Great great Uncle”.

George W. Giet was a sailmaker and originally from Pennsylvania. He was assigned to the “Preble” in the Gulf Blockading Squadron on October 3, 1861. Assigned to the “St. Mary’s” in the Pacific Squadron August 14, 1863. Assigned to the “Practice Ship Macedonia” on March 7, 1867. Assigned to the “Sabine” on April 12, 1869 for training cruises to European and Mediterranean ports. Assigned to the “Ticonderoga” on January 1, 1871 as part of the South Atlantic Squadron. Assigned to the New York Navy Yard in mid-1874. On February 5, 1877 assigned to the “Trenton” in the Mediterranean Squadron.

In June of 1877 Giet was granted sick leave and sent home to the Brooklyn Navy Yard. He died in his Brooklyn home two months later.  [jet] [PH:L]
