The subject is posed with one hand grasping the hilt of his sword and the other resting on his chest. He wears a dark double-breasted frock coat and matching dark trousers with sword belt and sword. The frock coat has shoulder straps and a single stripe around each cuff.

Contrast and clarity are good. Mount and paper have light edge wear and surface dirt.

Reverse has a photographer’s imprint for R. A. LORD… NEW YORK. Top of reverse has period ink ID of “2D ASSIST. ENGINEER C. H. BALL.”

Charles H. Ball was born in Portland, Maine on May 6, 1842. He was made a 2nd Engineer in the US Navy on July 1, 1861. He served aboard the USS PENSACOLA. On June 8, 1863, Ball received orders to return north from New Orleans aboard the USS KENSINGTON. He resigned on July 9, 1863 stating that his income as a Naval Officer was not enough to support his family. Apparently, his resignation was not accepted as September of 1863 finds him sick in New York and writing to Secretary of the Navy Wells that he is not yet ready for sea duty. However, by late October he is reporting able for duty. From the record it appears he spent some time on the USS HARTFORD and resigned on August 31, 1865.

After the war he lived in Portland, Maine where he worked as a painter and was a member of the Knights of Pythias and the Odd Fellows. He died in Portland on February 16, 1887 and is buried in Portland’s Evergreen Cemetery.  [AD] [PH:L]
