Here’s your opportunity to own a scarcely found image of Brigadier General Elon Farnsworth, who commanded 1st Brigade, 3rd Division of the Army of the Potomac’s Cavalry Corps at Gettysburg where he met his demise in the ill-fated charge ordered by General Kilpatrick around 5:00 on the evening of July 3rd.

This CDV features a vignette bust view of General Farnsworth wearing a frock coat and vest mostly unbuttoned with his collar turned down. His shoulder straps are visible but the rank is obscured.

This image was taken at Matthew Brady’s studio in Washington as evidenced by the Brady / Washington photographer’s mark on the mount. The reverse bears a Brady backmark. Also on the reverse is a handwritten pencil ID which reads “Gen. Farnsworth.”

Overall, this image is in good condition with surface dirt and foxing throughout. The photograph appears to have been wrinkled when applied to the mount as there is some wrinkling to the bottom left-hand corner. The back of the image shows surface dirt as well.

Farnsworth was 25 when he led the suicidal charge that killed him at Gettysburg. He’s buried in Rockton Cemetery in Rockton, Michigan.

A rare find! [cla][ph:L]
