Brown is posed seated at a table with pen in hand writing a letter and looking off to his right. He wears a commercial sack coat with lieutenant-colonel’s shoulder straps.

Contrast and clarity are outstanding. Paper and mount are clean.

Reverse has a photographer’s imprint for E. JACOBS…NEW ORLEANS. There is also a period ink ID of “LT. COL. E.M. BROWN.” Then in pencil “8th VT.”

Edward M. Brown was born in Hartland, Vermont on June 22, 1821. He was a graduate of the Norwich Institute and for a time taught school in Bristol, Pennsylvania before returning to Woodstock, Vermont where he became publisher and editor of the local newspaper and held several political offices.

Brown joined the 5th Vermont Infantry at Montpelier on August 24, 1861 and was commissioned 1st lieutenant and adjutant on September 2, 1861. He resigned on January 8, 1862 to accept an appointment as lieutenant-colonel of the 8th Vermont.

Brown was with the 8th Vermont until late 1862 when he was assigned to the Delta Office in New Orleans. He resigned on December 23, 1862.

After returning home he served five terms as the official reporter of the Vermont Senate. In 1873 he moved to Yankton, South Dakota where he was a deputy surveyor on government lands and the editor of the Press & Dakotian.

In 1890 Brown moved to St. Paul, Minnesota where he lived until his death on July 31, 1903. He is buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Maplewood, Minnesota.  [ad] [ph:L]
