CDV is a vignette bust view of Danforth in a partial left profile wearing a dark overcoat with a black felt collar.

Contrast and clarity are good. Mount is good while the paper shows some light foxing.

Reverse has a photographer’s imprint for WALLIS… DOVER (Delaware.)

ID is confirmed by several online images of the USS KEARSARGE officers.

Charles H. Danforth was born in Massachusetts in 1831. He enlisted in the U. S. Navy on December 19, 1861 and was assigned as Acting Masters Mate aboard the USS KEARSARGE and was onboard her when she fought her famous battle with the CSS ALABAMA. During that fight Danforth commanded Marines working a rifled gun in the forecastle and earned praise in the official report of his commanding officer.

Danforth left the USS KEARSARGE on November 23, 1864 and on December 12, 1864 he joined the supply ship USS CIRCASSIAN as an Acting Ensign. He served with that ship in the Western Blockading Squadron until April 10, 1865 and was discharged on May 11, 1865.

After the war Danforth moved to Denver, Colorado where he died on October 4, 1902. He is buried there in Fairmount Cemetery. [ad][ph:L]
