The Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States is a United States patriotic order, organized April 15, 1865, by officers of the Army, Navy or Marine Corps of the United States who "had aided in maintaining the honor, integrity, and supremacy of the national movement" during the American Civil War.
John Goshorn Kelley, 7th West Virginia Volunteer Infantry. It has no damage to the enamel and the ribbon is lightly soiled and no fraying. Link to connect the medal and ribbon is engraved with number 11940. This number traces to Kelley through the records of the Pennsylvania Commandery, which he joined in 1897. Records “Union Blue” has the number mistakenly listed as ‘11949”.
Also is a coin presented to the Citizens of Philadelphia. On the back is a patriotic shield over an eagle and is identified as from the 2nd Regiment PV.R.C. June 1864.
Kelley served as a Corporal in a 90 day unit, the 19th Pennsylvania Infantry. He was mustered into Co. D of that regiment on May 18th, 1861 and mustered out August 29th, 1861. Kelley re-enlisted as a Lt. Colonel on Sept 16th, 1861; on that date he was commissioned into Field & Staff of the 7th WV Infantry. He resigned on Sept 10th, 1862.
