This is a very good copy of the manual and inscribed by an officer who was killed in action at Port Hudson. McClellan came up with this manual in 1852 after his European tour and it is based, like most American military manuals of the period, on French practice. This copy was printed by Lippincott in Philadelphia and bears an 1862 printer’s date. It is in excellent condition, 118 pages long, with 24 plates at the back. Illustrations include not only posture and positions for the exercise, but placement of the feet, etc. This copy is clearly signed on the flyleaf in pencil, “James H. Bogart / Maj 162 Nyv.”

Before joining the volunteers, Bogart was reportedly the color sergeant and a charter member of the Albany Zouave Cadets. He served initially in the 43rd NY, enlisting at 22 on Aug. 3,1861 at Albany for 3 years, mustering in as 1st Lt Co. A on Aug. 25. He was appointed Adjutant Sept. 22, with a commission dated Nov. 6, giving him rank from October 1. He was  discharged July 16, 1862. During his time with it, the regiment saw action with the Army of the Potomac in the siege of Yorktown and fighting at Lee’s Mills, at Williamsburg, and in the Seven Days Battles, in which it lost 71 men. The 162nd NY was part of the Metropolitan Brigade, organized under the auspices of the NY City Metropolitan Police Department, and mustered into service in October 1862. Bogart was commissioned its Major on October 16, with rank as of the same date, and mustered in October 18.

They served at Washington until December and then shipped out to New Orleans, becoming part of the 19th Corps in February 1863. They saw their first action at Plaquemine on Dec. 31 and Bogart is credited with commanding three companies in a skirmish there again on Jan. 3, 1863. They are credited with further actions at Clinton Plank Road, Fort Bisland, Bayou Courtableau in March and April, and then the siege of Port Hudson in May and June- Banks’ effort to attack the Confederate-held stretch of the Mississippi from the southern end. The regiment took part in both the first assault of May 27 and the second assault of June 14, in the latter of which Bogart was one of two officers and six enlisted men killed or mortally wounded.

The Colonel wrote the following to a local paper: " The attack was begun by the 1st Brigade, under Col. Clark, 6th Michigan. I was ordered to support him, and to march in column of companies. As we issued from behind the woods where we formed, we were saluted by bullets, shot and shell, but the column advanced firmly amidst a terrible iron rain, and presently to a point where the Rebels had us under a cross fire of artillery. On this advance I lost Col. Bryan, shot through both legs. He fought as the brave only do, and so died, at 11 o'clock. Also, Maj. Bogart, struck by a shell, which tore away his sword hilt and carried it through his left hip. He lived but a few minutes. It being impracticable to convey his body to Baton Rouge, he was buried at the foot of a tree, which is marked and a board put up….”

Bogart’s remains were eventually recovered by his family and returned to New York in early 1864. His wood headboard and some photographs, including his battlefield gravesite, made an appearance on the Antiques Roadshow in the hands of a descendant in 2016 – we show a screenshot – along with a photo of him in the 43rd NY from an auction listing.

Port Hudson would not fall until after Grant’s taking of Vicksburg at the northern end of the Confederate stretch of the river in July 1863.  [sr][ph:L]
