This wartime manual is titled “REGULATIONS FOR THE ARMY OF THE CONFEDERATE STATES. 1863.” And was published in 1863 by ‘J. W. RANDOLPH, 121 MAIN ST., RICHMOND, VA.’  The boards are covered in a coated blue paper joined to a leather binding.  The spine reads “ARMY REGULATIONS” and is divided into 5 sections by perforated lines. The interior of the cover features a post-war period pasted tag reading “DR. HENERY R. SLACK’S PRIVATE LIBRARY” and a period ink signature that has given to a nice shade of brown reading “Thos. U. Harris/Waverly/Humphreys Co, Tenn.”  The flyleaf shows faded ink notations which read “W. S. Slack/9/6/90 Atlanta Ga.”  Written in pencil in a different hand is “Lieut. Thos U Harris/Book Bought at Shelbyville, Tenn. In the Month of May 1864/Price $5.00”.  A penciled price which does not match either example of handwriting reads “325.00”.   There is a bit of light staining and foxing throughout and light wear to the outer corners of each board. Pages 7-18 are on leaves which have loosened from the binding at the upper 1/3 of the pages.  All page edges and corners are sharp with some minor curling in several areas and all text is clear and legible. Overall measurements are 4.9” x 7.75”.

The 24th Tennessee Battalion Sharpshooters was officially fielded in May, 1863, with three companies under the command of Major Frank Maney. The nucleus of this battalion was Captain Frank Maney’s Company of Light Artillery, which was organized September 7, 1861 and surrendered at Fort Donelson; then reorganized December 1, 1862 as light artillery, but armed temporarily as infantry. It fought in the Battle of Murfreesboro with the 1st (Feild’s) Tennessee Infantry. It never was re-armed as artillery, but instead two companies, which had been organized in December 1862, were added to it and it was formed into a battalion of Sharpshooters.

The men were from Humphreys, County and assigned to G.E. Maney's and Palmer's Brigade, and in April, 1864, it consolidated with the 34th Regiment. The unit participated in the various campaigns of the Army of Tennessee from Chickamauga to Atlanta, moved with Hood into Tennessee, and was active in North Carolina. It reported 22 casualties of the 39 engaged at Chickamauga, and totaled 48 men and 22 arms in December, 1863. The battalion was included in the surrender on April 26, 1865.

According to available records, Lt. Thomas U. Harris was initially a 3rd Lieutenant in “Robert Garrett’s Company of Tennessee Volunteers” and then promoted to 2nd Lieutenant of Company B of the 24th TN Battalion in February of 1863.  Listed as “Absent”, “Sent to Hospital” in July & August 1863, but is present again by September 1863.  Absent on detached service from November 1863 through at least April 1864.  On detached duty in August 1864 by order of Gen. Bragg.  In September 1864 he was assigned as “collecting Stragglers” by order of Gen. Hood. He is listed on muster rolls through February 1865; he later signed an Oath of Allegiance dated both July 7, 1865 and “Columbus, GA May 11, 1865”.

An interesting and uncommon Confederate manual with links to a fearsome Sharpshooter unit and some of the worst fighting of the Civil War’s Western Theater.    [cm/L][ph:L]
