Adam’s residence was not listed when he enlisted as a 2nd Lt. at 28 years old on 5/14/1861 in Valatie, NY.  On 6/1, he mustered into Company K of the 30th New York.  He was promoted to 1st Lieutenant on 1/27/1862 of Company B and Captain of Company K on 10/31/1862. He participated in the battles of 2nd Bull Run, South Mountain, Antietam, and Chancellorsville before mustering out with the regiment on 6/18/1863 at Albany. Notably, he was one of only 27 officers and enlisted men present for duty who survived Antietam physically unscathed.

As if paperwork isn’t enthralling enough, Lieutenant Lampman was one of many officers who had to familiarize themselves with the Army’s various forms for payments, mustering, discharges, and muster rolls.  This booklet/manual was printed by the Government Printing Office of Washington in 1862.  The lines for name and rank are filled out in ink and read “Adam Lampman/1st Lieutenant/Co. B”. He also identically signed the title page twice with name, rank, and company – as well as the back cover. The manual includes samples of pertinent paperwork and detailed instructions for their completion.

A very neat piece that belonged to a true volunteer hero of the Civil War.  [cm][ph:L]
