A beautiful wood pocket compass measuring 2” x 2” x 0.75” with hinged lid and a very fine soldier identification on the lid.
A very detailed printed paper label is pasted at the bottom with points of the compass and degrees. The compass needle is mounded in the center. A brass stabilizer is pressed in place when the lid is closed to protect the needle. Two small brass hinges, and a brass hook closure.
Wood displays very attractive deep, dark patina. On the top of the lid, with fine white paint, is “1st Sgt. Wm. F. Calhoun 20th PA. VOL. CAV. 181st REGT.”
William F. Calhoun, in 1860 he was a teacher living in Blain, Perry County, Pennsylvania. He enlisted in Loysville, Perry County, August 8, 1862, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 13 as a private with Co. H, 133rd Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company May 25, 1863. He also enlisted and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg February 15, 1864, as 1st sergeant of Co. K, 20th Pennsylvania Cavalry (181st Pa). On June 17, 1865, he transferred to Co. K, 1st Pennsylvania Provisional Cavalry, as part of a war-end consolidation, and honorably discharged with his company July 13, 1865. He moved to Illinois shortly after the war, married, and started a family. Member of GAR Post # 141 (Dunham) in Decatur, IL. He died on 6/10/1929 and is buried in Fairlawn Cemetery in Decatur.
