This is a field manual for Civil War officers to learn troop movements and tactics. This small book measures 3.5” x 5.25”. Cloth cover, 100 pages. The full title is “The Field Manual for the Battalion Drill. Containing the Exercises and Maneuvers in the School of the Battalion. Arranged in a Tabular Form, for the Use of Officers in the U.S. Infantry: Translated, and Adapted to the U.S. Infantry Tactics, from the Latest French Authorities, by Capt. Henry Coppee, Late Instructor in the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.”
Identified in ink on front page, “Lieut. E.B. Eddy / Belmont / Kentucky”. A period clipped newspaper article regarding “The Third Regiment” is tucked in at the title page.
Ezra B. Eddy lived in Wabasha, MN. He enlisted on 11/6/1861 as a 1st Lieutenant in Company “G” of the 3rd Minnesota Infantry. He resigned on 7/10/1862 at Murfreesboro, TN.
The 3rd Minn. Infantry was assigned to the 16th brigade, Army of the Ohio. On April 27, moved to Murfreesboro, and on July 13th was attacked by Forrest's cavalry. Upon the third charge the regiment was surrendered to Forrest. With some strange foresight, Eddy resigned his commission just a few days before the whole regiment was captured.
Cover shows light wear with clean interior pages. Very nice overall. From the Texas Civil War Museum collection. [jet][ph:L]
