This copy of A New Manual of the Bayonet was published in 1861 by D. Van Nostrand and, according to a small pasted tag of the period, was purchased directly from the Metropolitan Book Store in Washington D.C.  A red fabric with a gold gilt and embossments covers the book. The spine has gold gilt text title and credits. The flyleaf is inscribed “Capt. Thos. J. Hoyt Asst. Adj. Gens 3d Brigade Porter(?)/Parker(?) Division Halls Hill Va Jan 10 1862” in a nicely browned period ink. Opposite the flyleaf on the inside of the front board is the aforementioned “Metropolitan Book Store” tag in the low left corner. The title page reads “A NEW MANUAL FOR THE BAYONET, FOR THE ARMY AND MILITIA OF THE UNITED STATES. BY LIEUT. J. C. KELTON. SIXTH REGIMENT U.S. INFANTRY. NEW YORK: D. VAN NOSTRAND, 192 BROADWAY. 1861.”

Pages are in good condition with edge wear and very minimal foxing among a select few.  30 complete plates are included, many of which unfold to illustrate bayonet drill.  The cover of the book is worn on the upper spine and a small split section extending from the left obscures part of the gilt title and revels the binding beneath. A similar condition is noted at the lower spine from the right (see attached images). Some typical minor corner wear is also noted but the gilt figure on the front cover is in excellent condition, as is the plain embossed matching figure on the rear cover.

Captain Hoyt enlisted and was commissioned on October 3rd, 1861 as a Captain and Assistant Adjutant General in the US Volunteers Adjutant General Department. He served until November 6, 1862, when he resigned his commission.  He passed away on October 24th, 1882.

Rare, identified manuals such as this enhance any Civil War collection. [cm][ph:L]
