Offered here is a very fine set, binoculars with leather case and framed citation for gallantry, carried by Captain George B. Bradish of Company “K”, 107th Infantry, 27th Division, A.E.F.
The binoculars are in very fine condition. Black enameled brass, with textured leather wrap, and leather neck strap. Made at, and stamped “U.S. Naval Gun Factory / Optical Shop Annex / Rochester, N.Y. U.S.A.” Also stamped “Military Stereo / 6 x 30”, “Signal Corps / U.S. Army”, and “Serial No EE 51590”. Optics are clear and the piece shows light wear to paint on edges.
Leather case shows heavier wear overall with rubs and scrapes to the exterior surfaces. No shoulder strap. The stitching on the hinged “lid” has split, and now the “top” portion with embedded compass is separate. On the back side of the case, written in ink amid some scuffing, is “George B. Bradish / Capt. Comd’g. Co. K 107 Inf. / Malone, N.Y. / U.S.A.”
The citation shows some aging as the original frame is quite weathered, especially on the back. This is the printed citation awarded to Bradish at Camp Upton, New York on March 27, 1919 for actions that are described below.
In 1917, the 7th New York National Guard was redesignated the 107th Infantry with additional personnel from 1st and 12th Infantry, New York National Guard, and assigned to the 27th Division. They were moved to France in May 1918, returning to the US in March 1919. The 27th Division including 107th Infantry participated in the Ypres-Lys and Somme Offensive campaigns.
Captain George Bradish was severely wounded in action on October 18, and cited for conspicuous gallantry for organizing and carrying out an attack against enemy machine guns on September 29, 1918 at Vendhuile that was part of the Battle of St. Quentin Canal. He died in 1977 and is buried in Notre Dame Cemetery, Malone, NY. [jet][ph:L]
