This remarkable American Bible Society New Testament is dated 1862 and remains in good, complete condition. The exterior is bound in slightly faded, lightly crazed (around edges) and minorly scuffed black leather with a geometric pattern and a loop and tab closure.  A light blue silk bookmark is tucked inside and there is no discernable damage to any of the pages, the edges of which are still finished in a metallic gold. The pocket-sized book measures 3.75” x 2.5” and is 0.8” thick.

Though the handwriting is challenging to read in full, the interior of the book features several inscriptions including a penciled “Ye Shall Be Born Again” on the inside cover, “William Sellew” and “1st Sunday of March” on the first blank leaf. On the second leaf, scripted ink writing reads “William Sellew Co. H 150 Pa. Presented by the Infant Class in the Sab (Sabbath)-School of 2nd Congregational (Cong.) Church (Ch.). West Newbury, Mass. by Rev. Hunter/Porter(?) Camp Convalescent Nov 15, 1862.”

According to records, William H. Sellew resided in Crawford County, PA and enlisted on 8/28/1862 as a private.  On that same day, he mustered into Company H of the 150th Pennsylvania Infantry and continued to serve until mustering out on 6/23/1865 at Elmira, New York.  The Company muster out roll indicates that Sellew was in the hospital from July 17th thru December 6, 1863, and again May 21, 1864 until October 1864, no reason given. He passed away in 1868 and is buried in Greendale Cemetery in Meadville, PA; burial records indicate his middle initial was W, not H.

The 150th Pennsylvania saw action from Chancellorsville through Appomattox as a unit of the famous “Bucktails”.  Under Brigade Commander Colonel Roy Stone, the 150th famously held the hotly contested McPherson Ridge on July 1st at Gettysburg.

This deeply personal item likely made it through many of the Civil War’s bloodiest fights – like its owner – and would be a feature of most any collection.  [cm/ld] [ph:L]
