ID’D SOLDIER’S WOOD CARVING – WM. JONES, 40TH ALABAMA INFANTRY

$235.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 1268-030

Offered here is a fine soldier’s wood carving about 4” long. The piece has a 2” link connected to a 2” long cage with free-floating ball inside; somewhat typical of period carvings produced by soldiers when bored in camp or incarcerated as prisoners.

Marked in period ink on the “cage” portion is “W.J.J.” “1863” and “C.S.A.” as well as a series of “x” and an arrow. The flat surface of the “link” is marked “WILLIAM J. JONES / 40TH REG. ALABAMA INF” on one side and “HAVANA HALE CO, ALABAMA” on the other.

William Jackson Jones, was born in Carrollton, Picken County, Alabama in 1840. Enlisted on 5/1/1862 as a Private in Company B, of the 40th Alabama Infantry. Wounded 6/4/1863 while on picket duty at Vicksburg, Mississippi. Severe wound in left arm which was amputated. Listed as “captured” on 7/4/1863 upon the capitulation of the Confederate garrison at Vicksburg. Married Theodosia Allen in 1885. Died in 1913 in Carrollton, Alabama and buried there.

The “Havana” Alabama connection is unknown, but Havana and Carrollton are only about 40-50 miles apart. Perhaps Jones was recuperating at that location.

Condition of the piece is excellent. From The Texas Civil War Museum collection. [jet] [ph:L]
