Offered here is a small 1862-dated New Testament published by the American Bible Society identified to Joseph Elder of the 22nd Maine Infantry.
Book measuring 2.5” x 3.75” and about .75” thick. Cover remains in very fine condition with “TESTAMENT AND PSALMS” in gilt lettering on the spine. Inside front cover features a pre-printed paper label pasted in place, “MAINE VOLUNTEER MILITIA. / FROM THE / YOUNG MEN’S BIBLE SOCIETY, / BANGOR, ME. / “SEARCH THE SCRIPTURES.”” Opposite that on the first end sheet, written in pen & ink is “Joseph J. Elder, Corinna, Maine. / Mr. Joseph B. Elder / Mrs. Hannah Elder”. Text pages and interior of book remain clean. Excellent condition overall.
Joseph J. Elder was from Corinna, Maine, and was 19 years old when he enlisted as a Musician into Company “E” of the 22nd Maine Infantry on October 10, 1862. This was a nine-month regiment that served around Washington, DC and in the Department of the Gulf. Elder was hospitalized with an unknown sickness on August 2, 1863 in Bellefontaine, Ohio. The regiment was mustered out on August 14, 1863. Joseph died in that hospital on August 20. The regiment lost 180 men during the war, including 1 officer and 8 enlisted men killed or mortally wounded, and 2 officers and 169 men (including Elder) who died from disease. He is buried in Higgins Cemetery, Corinna, Maine. [jet][ph:L]
