The American Bible Society has distributed bibles to US service personnel since 1817. During the Civil War, they furnished small copies such as this for the solider already bogged down by the weight of his kit - but desiring to read something of comfort to the spirit.
The black front cover is mostly separated from the binding of the front leaves but remains attached. A raised floral pattern is noted with some finish wear and minor wear along the edges of the front cover. The spine reads “TESTAMENT” in a gold block letter front. The reverse cover shows similar finish wear to the front with strong edges and corners.
Inscribed in six lines in blue ink on the second blank leaf are the words: “Sophonia A. Ingersol From Christ Church Sunday School Dec. 25th 1864 J. A. Whitman, Supt. (Superintendent)” Tucked between pages 8 and 9 is a remarkable dried and pressed 4-leaf clover. The pocket-sized book measures 3.8” x 2.4”.
A neat little book with historic provenance that would make a lovely addition to any Civil War collection. [cm][ph:L]
