This bible has an embossed leather cover and clasp, with gilt blindstamped title on the spine, and was printed in London in 1859. The condition is good, though with wear to the corners of the cover and separation on the inside that has loosened, but not fully detached, the flyleaf. The flyleaf bears a nice, period pencil inscription that sounds a bit like the owner may have emigrated to the U.S., but was determined to preserve and commemorate his Irish heritage: “Robert Freeland / A Native of Ireland / County of Armagh / Parish of / Derrynoose / Town Land of Carnagh [?]” The only uncertain portion is the town name, but there it pretty clearly begins “Ca” or “Co” and appears to end with a light “gh.”
We find a half-dozen Robert Freelands with service in the Union army during the Civil War. Some research might produce a candidate, but without an overt military association we hesitate to commit on a specific identification. It is a nice, period inscription regardless. [sr][ph:L]
