Authorized by the War Department, 1861. Published by J.B. Lippincott & Co., 1863. Owner inscription, in front eps (in pencil): “Fred. A. Ross / Union Rifles 133rd Regt”. 450 pp., plates. In green blind-stamped buckram 5.375” x 3.75, w/gilt spine lettering. Slight wear at the extremities, else near fine and handsome.
A resident of Terre Haute, IN, Frederick A. Ross enlisted as a Captain and was commissioned into Co. “D”, 133rd Indiana Infantry, 5/7/1864. He was mustered out 9/5/1864. His unit, the 133rd Indiana was organized and mustered into service 5/17/ 1864. Ordered to Tennessee, they stood rail road guard duty until September. Mustered out, 9/5/1864.
Born in Learsport, ME in 1834, Ross moved with his family to Oxford, OH, and then to Terre Haute, IN at the age of 15. Following the war, he was in the mercantile business until 1872 when he opened a real estate office. Served as the mayor of Terre Haute from 1892 – 1898. Chaired a committee to build the entrance tower at Highland Lawn Cemetery, now a national historical landmark. He was also involved with the Terre Haute Fire Department. Ross died in 1899 and is buried in Highland Lawn Cemetery in Terre Haute. His tombstone reads in part, “Friends Memorial / Mayor of Terre Haute 1892 – 1898 / A faithful Guardian of the Peoples Interests / A gallant Soldier in the War for the Union 1861 – 1865”.
