By Brigadier-Gen. Silas Casey. Published by D, Van Nostrand, New York, 1862. Owner inscription front eps, in ink: “A.A. Baxter / 1st Sergt / Co. “F”, 4th Michigan Rifles.” 279 pp., plates. In green blind stamped buckram, 3.5” x 5, faded gilt spine lettering. Exhibits wear at the extremities. Else VG.
A resident of Genesee County, MI, 21 year-old enlisted on 5/20/ 1861, and was mustered into Co. “F”, 2nd Michigan Infantry. Discharged for disability, 7/14/1862. Then on /9/24 /1864 he re-enlisted into Co. “F”, Reorganized 4th Michigan Infantry. Promoted to 1st Sergt. and then to 2nd Lieut. (6/28/1865), he was discharged for disability 4/19/1866.
During Baxter’s time with the 2nd Michigan the unit was engaged at the Battle of Bull run and again during the 1862 Va. Peninsula Campaign through the Battle of Malvern Hill. During his time with the reorganized 4th Michigan the unit was engaged defending against Hood’s attack on Murfreesboro, prior to the Battle of Nashville. Mustered out in Houston, Texas, 5/26/1886, the unit lost 7 men killed and mortally wounded and 141 by disease for a total of 148.
