Published by His Majesty’s Special Command. Eyre & Spottiswoode, London 1849. Owner inscription on title page (in pencil) : “Segt. Maj. Warren F. Sherman / 160th New York Vol. / New Orleans Lou”. Non-paginated. In black blind-stamped buckram, 5.25” x 3.5, w/gilt edges, silver clasp, & gilt spine lettering. Exhibits rubbing of corners and wear, head & foot. With much pencil endpaper scribbling, front & rear.
Warren F. Sherman enlisted, 9/5/1862 and on 11/21/1862, was mustered as sergeant major into Field & Staff, 160th New York Infantry, 9/5/1862. He was discharged 3/15/1864.
Organized at Elmira, NY, in early autumn 1862, this unit was attached to the Department of the Gulf, engaging in Louisiana operations—The 1863 Siege and attack on Port Hudson, the Battle of Sabine Pass, Red River Campaign—before being transferred to the Army of the James in Virginia, participating the battles for the Bermuda Hundred, before joining in Phil Sheridan’s operations against Jubal Early in the Shenandoah Valley. Following the victorious Grand Review in Washington, DC, it was posted to Savannah, GA, where it was mustered out,11/1/1865. During service it lost 59 men killed and mortally wounded, and and160 by disease for a total of 219.
