Collins / Capt. of Co A / 149th P.B.V. 279 pp., 3.5”x 5.25. In blind stamped brown buckram w/ gilt spine lettering. Exhibits wear and the extremities and left front cover margin. Spine chipped head and foot. Else good minus / fair plus.
Joseph Collins enlisted as a Private, drafted into Co. “A”, 149th Pennsylvania, 8/15/1862/ and was mustered out 6/24/1865. Attached to the Army of the Potomac, the 149th PA was attached to the 1st Corps from Chancellorsville on, participating in the Battle of Gettysburg [First day’s fight, July 1, 1863] and in the Bristoe and Mine Run Campaigns through the end of the year. In March 1864 it was transferred to the 5th Corps with which it served through Grant’s 1864 “Overland Campaign” and on through Hatcher’s Run, February 1865. Ordered to Baltimore and to the Draft Rendezvous in Elmira, NY, mustering out 5/6/1865. During service it lost 164 men killed and mortally wounded, and 172 by disease for a total of 336.
