Washington Printing Office, 1863. Owner signature, front & rear eps: “S.J. Pealer /Asbury / Capt. Com A of 74th PA Vols.” 594 pp., forms. In blue blind-stamped buckram w/gilt spine lettering and ornamentation. Exhibits medium cover wear and at the extremities. Else good, w/tight spine.
Born in 1833, Samuel J. Pealer was a 32-year-old resident of Columbia County, PA, when he enlisted as a Private, mustering into Co. “E”, 209th PA Infantry, 8/31/1864, and was discharged, 3/12/1865. Enrolled at Harrisburg, 3/13/1865, he commissioned Captain in Co. “A”, 74th PA Infantry. Discharged 5/8/1865.
In his time with the 209th PA Volunteers, the regiment participated in the Siege of Petersburg. During his brief service with 74th PA., the unit was posted along the B & O Railroad line in West Virginia. Invites further research. [jp/ld][ph:L]
