Jesse W. Hurst, aged 28, enlisted as Captain and was commissioned into “E” Company, NY Union Coast Guard, on 5/28/1861, and was discharged 10/15/1861. Civilwardata.com indicates also having service in the 99th NY Infantry version of the regiment, but not commissioned.
An unusual regiment, the 99th New York was originally organized, in New York, as a Naval Brigade to be provided gunboats to cruise along the Atlantic Coas. Unit was reorganized and designated New York Infantry in August 1861. It garrisoned various Forts and participated in numerous small actions during the course of the war. the Southeastern theater during the course of the war. Mustered out in Roanoke, NC, 7/15/1862. During service it lost 39 killed and mortally wounded and 164 by disease for a total of 203. [jp][ph:L]
