This is a thick “pocket bible” that was presented to John McCall by his Sunday school teachers in 1854.
This is “THE HOLY BIBLE CONTAINING THE OLD AND NEW TESTAMENTS” from the American Bible Society and dated 1852. Book measures approximately 4.5” x 3.25” x 1.5”. Cover shows wear especially along edges and cover folds at the spine. Binding remains strong. Spine has “HOLY BIBLE” in gold lettering.
First blank page features the ink inscription, “To John McCall from the Sunday School Teacher, Church of Epiphany. Philada, May 22nd 1854.” Small print, 979 pages.
A slip of paper from a previous collector details the military history of John McCall in the 28th PVI. However, there are numerous men named “John McCall” from Philadelphia that enlisted in the Civil War. There is no way to determine which is the one actually named within this book. Knowing collectors, perhaps it was simply a matter of choosing the soldier with the best history.
Regardless, this is a fine specimen and typical of that carried by soldiers during their time in service. [jet][ph:L]
