This beautiful gold G.A.R. badge is dated 1894, very close to the highpoint of the veterans’ organization when it reached more than 400,000 in 1890 and was a powerful force in politics and veterans’ affairs. This has a Post Commander’s silver eagle on blue background miniature shoulder strap suspended in the middle by links from a GAR eagle pin at top, and gilt bars lettered in enamel on a stippled ground reading, “POST 560” above and “CHICAGO” below, all backed by a stars and stripes flag ribbon.
The medal is the G.A.R. star with motto in an enameled band around the central deeply cast and chased scene of soldier and sailor shaking hands, and the points of the star are filled in with small branch of service insignia with small pearls at the trefoil tips. The reverse is inscribed: “Presented to P.C.- Mich. Riordon by W.S. Hancock Post 560 Dept. of ILL. G.A.R. Jan 2nd 1894.”
The badge is in excellent condition. The only flaw we see is some small chipping to the blue enamel background of the shoulder strap in its upper corners and a slight scratch at bottom right. [sr] [ph:L]
