Here is a handsome, post-war, suspension ladder badge once owned by Private Samuel A. Ridge of Company “H”, 59th Regiment, Illinois Volunteer Infantry, a three-year regiment. Records show Ridge was from Kansas, Illinois and enlisted as a Private on January 20, 1864 and was mustered into service on February 8. Private Ridge transferred to the Veteran Reserve Corps on January 26, 1865 when the regiment completed its term of service.
The 59th Illinois was organized at St. Louis on September 18, 1861 and mustered out at New Braunfels, TX on December 8, 1865. The regiment was part of the 4th US Army Corps during much of its time in service.
Private Ridge’s suspension badge, in very good condition, is a stamped, two-piece, silver-nickel alloy badge consisting of a top scroll bar and a silver shield device, all suspended by small rings. The upper bar face is stamped “S.A. RIDGE” and features a spring pin clasp on the reverse. The shield shaped badge device is stamped “Co. H / 59th / ILL. / INF.” with a 4th Corps badge (triangle).
Badge measures 2 ½” tall x 1 ¾” wide. [jet]
