By Brig. Gen. Silas Casey, published by D. Van Nostrand & Co., New York, 1863.   Flyleaf owner inscription, in ink, “Isaac Walters/ Co. F 20th Ind.”  On front flyleaf. 279 pp., ills. In green blind-stamped cloth, 4.75” x 5.25. Exhibits light wear & soiling, else VG, with tight spine.

Isaac Walters was a resident of Royal Centre, IN, who enlisted as a private and was mustered into Co. “F”, 20th Indiana Infantry,  7/22/1861. He re-enlisted with the veteranized regiment, 1/1/1864, and was mustered out 22/1861.  His unit, the 20th Indiana, served with the 3rd Corps of the Army of the Potomac (later transferred to 2nd Corps), participating in all the major engagements from the Peninsula Campaign through Gen. Lee’s surrender at Appomattox. At Gettysburg it was badly cut up at Spangler’s Spring on July 2, 1863. During service it lost 201 men killed and mortally wounded and 113 by disease for a total of 314.

Isaac’s brother David, sadly, starved to death at the Prisoner of War camp in Florence, South Carolina in 1865.

Excellent memento of a soldier of a “Hoosier” unit that saw hard service at Gettysburg. Accompanied by a brief amount of internet research material.  [jp]
