This scrapbook type of album contains sentiments, lithograph images, poems and inscriptions by friends and family members to Thomas Meredith Rae of the 12th Mississippi Infantry, Co. “D”. Most were written during the Civil War. One poem is dedicated to the 12th Mississippi. Also contains newspaper clippings. One is about Major General Hill’s address to the 12th Mississippi Regiment, telling of his love for Mississippi and her soldiers. Another article is about the death of Rae’s brother, Captain William J. Rae of the 12th Mississippi. Rae had two other brothers who also served in the Confederate Army, George and Robert.
Album measures 6” by 7 ¾”. Boards are covered in brown leatherette with an embossed design. Center shows a round green emblem with gilt lettering that reads, “PHILOPENA ALBUM”. Cover shows moderate wear. Front cover and first few pages are loose, as well as a few pages at the end. Others remain tightly sewn together. All pages are totally readable.
The Mississippi Light Artillery was organized with men from Jefferson County. They fought at Shiloh and in the Kentucky Campaign, then many battles from Murfreesboro to Atlanta, moved with Hood into Tennessee, and was active in North Carolina.
Thomas Meredith Rae lived from March 1, 1842 – June 26, 1919. He is buried in Wintergreen Cemetery in Port Gibson, Mississippi. His tombstone reads, “His words were kindness, His deeds were love, His spirit humble, He rests above.”
