This is a stamped brass soldier’s ID disc with a bust of President Lincoln at center surrounded by “ABRAHAM LINCOLN PRESIDENT US” across the top and “WAR OF 1861” across the bottom of the obverse. The reverse is stamped “CHARLES E. INGRAHAM-CO. A-2D VET CAV.- N.Y.S.V.-POTTERSVILLE, N.Y.” The badge is bright and mostly clean though there is some light surface dirt. All stamping is very readable.
Charles E. Ingraham was a married 27 year old farmer when he enlisted as a Private in Company G, 22nd New York Infantry on September 24, 1861. At the time he was described as being 5’ 9” tall with a light complexion, blue eyes and light hair. The regiment was sent to Arlington where it was assigned to Key’s 4th Corps of the Army of the Potomac. Before the regiment could see any serious action Ingraham became sick and went to the hospital. He was discharged for disability on May 5, 1862.
On August 15, 1863 Ingraham enlisted as a Private in Company A, 2nd New York Veteran Cavalry and served with them throughout the rest of the war. He was involved in numerous small actions in Louisiana and Alabama. At one point he suffered from sunstroke and a fall from his horse for which he later collected a pension. He was mustered out at Talladega, Alabama on November 8, 1865.
After the war Ingraham returned to New York where he continued to suffer from the effects of his fall. He died in Pottersville, New York on May 23, 1908.
Disc is accompanied by Ingraham's military and pension records from the National Archives in Washington, D.C.
