The most famous, single-shot, percussion firearm used during the Civil War was the Sharps carbine, a .52 caliber, breechloading firearm invented and patented by Hartford, Connecticut native Christian Sharps. Presented here is an example of the New Model 1863 Sharps carbine that features serial #45992, was converted to centerfire following the Civil War, and is marked “CO. 10 CAV.”

Carbine has a 21½” long round barrel and a “straight-breech” type receiver fitted to its walnut shoulder stock and fore stock. All of the stampings on the top of the barrel are long gone. Rear, flip-up sight is complete with strong “Lawrence” markings and likely replaced. Bore is clean with strong rifling.

Maker markings and patent designations on the lock plate are worn but remain readable; the patent stamp on the left side is only partially visible. Serial number strongly stamped unto the receiver tang. Breechblock and lever mechanics operate smoothly. Cartridge case ejector works well. Hammer/trigger mechanics are strong and crisp. Iron sling bar with ring is present; back screw (blued) likely replaced.

Gunmetal shows wear overall with a dark gray color and scattered pitting. Barrel shows the heaviest pitting.

Wood stock retains attractive rich color. There are no inspector cartouches visible. Usual dings from age and heavy use. Left side shows honest saddle wear and heavy sling ring wear. Stamped into the stock on the right side along the butt plate is “CO. 10 CAV.”

The 10th Cavalry Regiment of the United States Army was formed as a segregated African-American unit, the 10th Cavalry was one of the original "Buffalo Soldier" regiments in the post–Civil War Regular Army.

This New Model Sharps carbine conversion is a fine, well used example of a favorite Civil War cavalry weapon that was converted to continue its service into the Indian War period with the 10th Cavalry “Buffalo Soldiers”.  [jet][ph:L]
