Presented here is a classic Colt cap and ball revolver commonly referred to as the 1849 Pocket Model. This personal sidearm, in good original condition overall, features a 6” long, octagonal barrel matched to a .31 caliber, six-shot cylinder that has a roll pressed design retaining all the “stagecoach” scene which is still clearly visible. Safety pins are all hammered down. All serial numbers (196540) match on the barrel, frame, loading lever, cylinder, trigger guard, and back strap. Number indicates that this was manufactured in late 1861. The wedge has serial number 90343.
“ADDRESS COL SAML COLT NEW-YORK, U.S. AMERICA” is stamped on the top facet of the barrel. “Pin” muzzle sight is missing. The standard “COLTS / PATENT” is stamped on the left side of the frame. Screw heads are in good condition. Gun metal is bright overall with traces of silver plating. Octagonal barrel has a few small dings around the wedge on right side.
Revolver has fine action with one exception. The small hand spring that advances the cylinder must be broken. The cylinder advances fine when held in the downward position (using gravity to push the hand out), but does not advance when held pointed upward.
Grips are of varnished, one-piece, walnut in good condition. Strong and tight, grips have minor wear along bottom edges. Back strap and the trigger guard are brass with perhaps traces of original silver-plated wash remaining; most remains around trigger guard.
Engraved on the back strap and butt strap is, “Presented to Geo. W. Marsh / by his Friends.” Unfortunately, there are too many “George W. Marsh” soldiers who served during the Civil War.
Known as the successor to the Baby Dragoon, the Model 1849 Pocket was a small version of the Model 1851 Navy revolver and proved ever popular through its end of production in 1873. Here is a good “identified” example of this Colt firearm. [jet] [ph:L]
