Plant revolver, third model, with brass frame. Brass retains no traces of silver wash. Serial #3697. Clear maker's stamp with address on top of barrel, “Plant’s Mfg. Co. New Haven, CT.” and “Merwin & Bray” stamp on left side of barrel. Patent stamp on cylinder is completely worn off. Grips look nice but show shrinkage along edge of frame. Mechanics strong. Cartridge ejector rod intact, but missing ball on end. Overall a nice private-purchase Civil War revolver that used patented cupfire cartridges.
Back strap is engraved “Capt. Robert A. Daniel”. In April of 1861, Daniels enlisted in York as a private in the 16th Pennsylvania Infantry which only served for three months. After his term expired with the 16th he immediately enlisted in the 87th PA. Infantry in September, 1861 as a second lieutenant in Company G. This regiment saw considerable service in various districts, suffering a total of 202 casualties during the war. Daniels was promoted to first lieutenant in September of 1863 and assumed command of his company.
There are no details regarding when he may have been considered “Captain” Daniel. Records folder comes with revolver. [jet]
