Here is an original, identified, Civil War ‘Burnside’ 5th Model cavalry carbine specimen in excellent condition. Via NARA company ordnance records provided, this carbine was issued to Private Daniel Nolop of Company A and I, 4th Wisconsin Cavalry Regiment during the Civil War.

A native of Brant County in Ontario, Canada, Daniel Nolop was a twenty-year-old farmer from Albion, WI when he enlisted in Company I, 4th Wisconsin Cavalry regiment on Feb 26, 1864. Nolop was with the regiment through all of 1864 and 1865 and mustered out of service on May 28, 1866. His unit was mostly employed in Baton Rouge, LA picketing, foraging and dispersing small bands of guerillas. In 1865, it was sent on an expedition to Mobile, AL and then on to Texas where it remained until mustered out in May 1866.

Nolop’s cavalry shortarm is a model .54 caliber, single-shot, percussion breech-loading carbine produced by the Burnside Rifle Company of Providence, Rhode Island. Designed by Ambrose E. Burnside, the carbine is one of some 43,000 such weapons manufactured by the company during 1863 and 1864. A remarkable example of a veteran carbine of the war, it employed the uniquely designed, tapered, copper Burnside cartridge.

Carbine features a hinged center section that drops down when the inner latch in the triggerguard is activated that allows for quick insertion of the brass cartridge. The shoulder arm bears serial # 31771 and exhibits a dusky, plum gray patina on barrel and a dark gray color on most other metal surfaces. Lockplate tang shows maker’s marks “BURNSIDE RIFLE Co. / PROVIDENCE R. I.” Lock markings are clear and visible. Clean maker’s mark “BURNSIDE’S PATENT / MARCH 25TH, 1856” on the receiver at top of frame. Numerous inspector marks found various components. Strong crisp mechanics. Bore is minty.

Walnut stock is original and in excellent condition with two sharp cartouches on the left side. Stock appears to have been refinished at one time and exhibits just a handful of very shallow dings and scratches consistent with use and age. Fitted with a cavalry sling bar, carry ring, forend, barrel band and the single sling swivel at the base of the stock. Carbine has the small guide screw in the center of the right side of frame that allowed a smooth operation of the breech when activated in the breechblock.

Many other Federal cavalry regiments such as the 1st Michigan, 5th, 6th, 7th Ohio, 1st New Jersey and the 3rd, 14th and 18th Pennsylvania cavalry units were issued the Burnside carbine. Carbine comes with the soldier’s military and pension records from the National Archives in Washington, DC. An excellent Civil War ‘Burnside’ carbine that is identified to a Wisconsin cavalryman.
