This Army officers' saber is officially called “saber for all officers, Model 1902”. It was adopted on July 17, 1902, by authority of General Order No. 81. The M1902 saber was authorized for all officers, both infantry and cavalry, with the exception of Chaplains.

The sword measures 36.5” long overall while the lightly curved blade measures 29.75”. Blade is bright with only light wear. No edge nicks. Etching remains is fine condition. The left side has the Ames name and address at the ricasso with floral and military motifs extending to within 8” of the tip. A script “U.S.” is positioned near the midpoint. The right side of the blade features similar floral and military etching. The name “Fred A. Mangelsdorf” is etched at the center on this side. No research on the name.

German silver knuckle guard with three additional branches. Black hard rubber grip with four finger grooves. Leather washer is present at ricasso. A woven gold and black sword knot is attached at the top of the knuckle guard. All in fine condition.

Scabbard is nickel-plated steel and remains bright and mirror-like.

A very fine example of this pre-WW1 officers’ sword.  [jet] [ph:L]
