Model 1852 Naval Officer dated 1861 by Brown, Boston Mass. White washed sharkskin grip.  Manufactured: Boston, Mass.  Maker: S.E. Brown  Year: 1861  Model: M1852 Navy Officer   Size: 28.9 inch blade

Model 1852 Naval Officer of Edward W. Halera (inscribed on the guard) dated 1861 and etched S. E. / Brown / Boston -- (Mass.) White washed sharkskin grip with twisted brass wire. Quillon is flat sided with a deeply cast and chased dolphin design on both sides. Pommel has the Navy eagle within a circle of stars on the dome and a Federal shield between the leaf design. The guard has a large U.S.N ribbon among the oak leaves. The blade is stamped in a rectangle on the decorated ricasso 1861. It has foliate, a Dolphin with trident, scrolls, a large block letter U.S.N followed by scrolls and ending with a Liberty pole. The reverse also has a decorated ricasso, S.E. / (((o))) / Brown / ((((o)))) / Boston. There is a large anchor with chain, designs and a Naval scene of two ships, one a side-wheeler with sales and a U.S. Flag. The other a 3 mast schooner and also a dingy with 2 men. Mountain / island back ground. It ends with an eagle's head holding a knotted rope. The scabbard is back seamed leather with plain brass mounts and knotted rope ring bands. The carry rings are small and copper. The drag is also plain with a dolphin drag blade.

Edward W. Halcro was  born in Scotland in 1836.  He enlisted as Mate in the US Navy on 3/5/62. Promoted to Acting Ensign 11/27/63. Honorably discharged 2/3/66. Re-enlisted as Acting Ensign on 4/5/66. Appointment revoked 2/6/67. Died in Norfolk Hospital April 5, 1867. Served on "Genesee," "Ovetta," "Sarah Bruen," "Idaho," and "New Hampshire." He is buried Hingham Center Cemetery, Hingham, Plymouth County, MA.  [ss, ld] [ph:L]
