This is a lovely example of a New York depot canteen with characteristic smooth sides.
The condition is wonderful with a complete light-blue to gray jean cloth cover. A few minor holes and seam separations do not detract from the overall presentation. Notably, the canteen retains its stopper in an absolutely excellent condition. The sling is gone, but antique twine has been run through the canteen strap loops and joined at the top, presumably for hanging purposes.
The most interesting aspect of this canteen is a partial tag with Civil War period font and text that faintly reads “48th Regiment”. We do not have any further information, but it likely denotes a 48th state volunteer regiment and the tag likely had a full personal identification at one time.
This is the perfect chance to add a unique US issue canteen to your collection, something every rounded collection deserves. [sr] [ph:L]
