The model 1858 canteen was the most popular canteen of the Civil War period. Canteen measures approximately 7 ¾” in diameter. It is covered in nice dark blue/gray wool. The cover is nearly complete with just a small seam split on each side.

The three sling loops and spout are present. The pewter spout has no maker’s mark but does have a soldier’s name carved in, “T.J. Lindley  Co. B”.  This is a New York Depot canteen complete with stopper and chain. The chain has become detached but the one strap bracket does have the small hole where is was once attached. A few small dents, otherwise in fine overall condition.

The original cotton shoulder strap remains on the canteen.  It has been knotted and has a couple of frayed weak points but otherwise complete and nice.

There are three possibilities as to the identity of this soldier; all in a Company B. There is a “Thomas J. Lindley” in the 136th Indiana Infantry which was a 100-day unit. There are two “Thomas Lindley” soldiers with no given middle initial. One was in the 13th Indiana Cavalry and one in the 24th Indiana Infantry.

This is a nice example of an identified Civil War smooth-side canteen, still covered and with a sling.  [jet] [ph:L]
