This small pair of box spurs was meant to wear on the heel of the boot with the spike at the back of the yoke penetrating the boot heel. Spurs are made of iron with a 2.25 inch arm protruding off the back of the yoke and holding an 8-pointed rowel. Both spurs show light wear with one being a little more discolored from age and storage than its mate.

A verbal ID says that these spurs belonged to Homer Hine Baldwin who served in the 1^st Ohio Infantry for three months being mustered out on June 26, 1861.

Baldwin then received a commission to 2^nd Lieutenant in the 5^th US Artillery to date from May 5, 1861. The battery saw action at Gaines’ Mill, 2^nd Bull Run, Port Hudson and Gettysburg.

Baldwin received a brevet promotion to 1^st Lieutenant for his actions at Gettysburg where he commanded Battery C on General Sickles 3^rd Corps front and was wounded. According to Greg Coco’s book “WASTED VALOR” Baldwin was one of the first to come upon the wounded Confederate General Barksdale. Baldwin said “Barksdale of Mis. was wounded in front of our battery. I gave him brandy and water then I got a surgeon and fixed him up as comfortably as possible.”

Lieutenant Baldwin was later brevetted to Captain on April 8, 1864 for his actions during the Red River Campaign and on December 2, 1864 he was given promotion to 1^st Lieutenant in the Regular Army.

After the war Baldwin remained in the 5^th U.S. Artillery until his death in Chattanooga, Tennessee on June 11, 1870 of consumption.

He is buried in Lakeview Cemetery in Cleveland, Ohio.  [AD] [ph:L]
