The knapsack offered was the product of S. Isaac and Campbell of London. Here, in part, is what William Albaugh had to say about this company in his book Confederate Edged Weapons.".... Isaac, Campbell & Co. were in existence only during the war. Their contracts were only with the South. Therefore, all Civil War items bearing this name can be considered Confederate. Quantities of buttons, knapsacks, etc., etc. are to be found...". Who Mr. Campbell was is uncertain but prior to 1861 S. Isaac ran a sole proprietorship business. All products supplied by Isaac & Campbell were of the finest quality and up to the highest standards these included, swords, long arms and military regalia. The Confederacy failed to pay their debt to Isaac & Campbell which resulted in the demise of the company.
Offered is a commercial version (non-British military) of the British Pattern 1856 knapsack. Called by many the "Trotter Pattern" but having no internal wooden frame. It is constructed of white canvas, painted black on the exterior surfaces. There are leather reinforced corners and leather straps. These knapsacks had removable over the shoulder detachable straps; these are no longer with this example. All interior closing straps remain except one of the two bottom closing straps. Both small roller buckles remain attached on the lower corners of the cover flap. Both brass “J” hooks and the middle buckle remain on the bottom. A stabilizing wood strips remain in place at the top of the cover flap. “S. ISAAC CAMPBELL & CO. LONDON” is stenciled on the interior of the cover flap.
Overall, the condition is good or better. Several splits and separations to the painted canvas have been professionally backed to stabilize them using material from a Civil War Union knapsack. Minor seam restorations have been done on the leather components and the leather treated. Otherwise, the pack shows light wear overall but displays very well. Recently de-accessed from a Texas museum. Very rarely seen on the market in any condition! [pe] [ph:L]
