This is a small lancet case with slots for four lancets, two of which are present, in good condition with two-piece, tortoise shell folding two piece sheath/handles, and marked “Weiss / London” also in great shape. These are of standard form, short, double edged with spear points used for small incisions for drainage and the like. The case is elegant, with textured silver front, back and side panels, bearing a ribbon/basket weave pattern, with gilt brass frame/mouldings, and convex hinged top decorated with a floral engraved border. The spring catch in in place and the case itself is housed in an elegant little brown leatherette box lined in blue velvet and having a hinged cover, with its own spring catch.
The flat bottom of the case is professionally engraved in script: “Dr. James Bordley / from his Friend / W.H. De C. Wright.” Wright is certainly William Henry De Courcy Wright (1795-1864,) son of a Maryland senator and Governor, and himself a lawyer, Baltimore city solicitor and U.S. consul in Brazil. Bordley, was a Maryland doctor, born in 1808 and died in 1870, and progenitor of a long line of identically named medical professionals.
The case, box, and lancets are in excellent condition, the raised mouldings of the case only showing wear to the gilt from handling. [sr][ph:L]
