Brooklyn, a separate city during the Civil War, contributed many troops to the Union cause - the 14th Brooklyn, for example, is one of the best-known units of the war and proudly retained its local, militia designation rather than the number assigned to it as one of the volunteer regiments of the New York line. This comes with a clipping from the November 10, 1866, issue of Harper’s Weekly describing the presentation of the medals by the city to its veteran soldiers and sailors of the war, and picturing them both, front and back.

This is the soldiers’ version, using a foliate shield planchet, on one face showing a standing soldier at center wearing a tunic and shako, holding a rifle with bayonet at parade rest, set in an oval with border reading, “Presented by the city of Brooklyn / to one of its veterans” with the date “1866” at bottom and a knight’s helmet at top with a necklace and star at its throat holding the suspension ring. (The Navy version featured a sailor.) The other side shows the seal of the City of Brooklyn: a robed female figure cradling the fasces, the bound rods and ax symbolizing magisterial power in the Roman Republic, before the symbol’s twentieth century corruption, and the motto “EENDRAGHT MACKT MAGT,” or “Unity Makes Strength” in Dutch, as appropriate for the city’s early history. The medal shows some rubbing to the high points, indicating it was proudly worn. The ribbon and top and top bar are likely replacements, though we have seen some variant top bars and ribbons both.

We show also the scene of the presentation as depicted in the same issue of Harper’s Weekly, from a digital source. Among the luminaries present was Admiral Farragut, who received a special gold medal at a dinner later. The medals awarded to the city’s veterans had been boxed and were presented to the men by way of the captains under whom they had served. [sr] [ph:m]
