This relic example of an original, Model 1840 heavy cavalry saber was found in a Gettysburg house on the Baltimore Pike sometime in the 1930s. Imported by the Philadelphia firm of William Horstmann, the blade has been heavily cleaned but remnants of the maker’s address on the obverse ricasso shows” “HORSTMANN” over “PHILA.” Blade specimen exhibits a smooth appearance with rust pitting or oxidation overall. Blade is missing its original leather washer. Pommel cap of the Phrygian helmet design bears no decoration, no inspector’s marks but does exhibit a “48” likely a rack a number. Walnut grips are wrapped with black bridle leather that is dried, has shrunk, and suffers from chipping and scuffing. Also missing its brass wire. The brass sword hilt, with its brass knucklebow, quillon and two-branch guard, is lose on the tang. Both branches show evidence of impact and are bent. Hilt bears a pleasing, bronze patina. No scabbard. This imported war blade with its provenance from Gettysburg is a relic specimen of a Horstmann heavy cavalry saber that would add to any Civil War sword collection.
