This early tourism photo features one of Gettysburg’s most prominent landmarks, the famed Devil’s Den. Standing in front of the iconic boulders are young men in unidentified uniforms, likely cadets from a military academy.  They each sport the same five button coats with cuff braiding, trousers with a single line of trim down the outside legs, and hats of identical design. The man at center is comparatively older and does not match the style of the “cadets” – perhaps an instructor or chaperone. The bottom edge of the mounting card is labeled “Devil’s Den. Gettysburg Penna.”, written in cursive ink. The mounting card is an off-white color with sharp edges and corners. Light foxing and staining is noted in localized areas as shown, but lends an antique characteristic that compliments the age of the photo. The mounting card is torn at bottom but the tear does not extend to the photo, which remains in a very nice condition. The reverse is free of any writing or labels, but foxing, discoloration and staining is present at the center, corner areas, and left edge. The center top edge shows some cracking in the outer layer of paper that does not extend through to the front. A piece of transparent tape prevents the bottom tear from worsening.

Overall measurements are 11.6” x 10.2”.

An attractive early piece of battlefield history.  It would display nicely among any collection. [cm][ph:L]
