The 8th Pennsylvania Cavalry Monument sits along Pleasanton Avenue, just north of the Pennsylvania Monument on the crest of Cemetery Ridge. Notably, a tree trunk was later added to the sculpture to support the hefty stone artwork.

This photo shows the sculpture of horse and trooper in full, along with the top of the rock base. The plaque seen today on the rock appears to have not yet been placed. Though the unit was heavily involved in the Gettysburg Campaign, they were assigned the important task of guarding the supply train near Manchester, Maryland during the battle.

No credits or identifying markings are visible on the image or the mounting card, but the style matches Gettysburg images from the 1880’s-1890’s. The card is a dark burgundy color with gold vertical edges, while the image extends to both horizontal edges. The card and photo both show wear, with two tears at upper left, a smaller tear at right bottom, and corner loss at upper right. Some flaking of the outer image layer is noted along the top and bottom and minor rolling is present along all edges. There are areas of surface staining, most prominently at right and upper left.

The reverse is blank with two sections of mild vertical discoloration and light horizontal markings.  Two small surface stains are visible at lower right and upper left.  Flaking is noted in localized places along all edges of the reverse outer paper layers.  Most of the wear would not be noticeable with proper framing. Overall measurements are 10.1” x 13.9”.

Early photographs of Gettysburg are a rare treat for the collector with an interest in the evolution of the park and its many monuments and memorials.  Given the lack of a plaque and what is visible in the background, this image likely dates to around the time the monument was erected. A rare item for the discerning image collector or anyone wanting to add a scarce Cavalry piece to their Civil War portfolio.  [cm][ph:L]
